Are the Dylon Dyes colorfast?
Yes. Dylon Permanent Fabric Dyes are fiber reactive.
Colors are permanent and will not fade or wash out.
What type of fabrics are suitable for using
with Dylon Permanent Fabric Dyes?
Cotton, linen, viscose rayon and silk are natural
fibers that achieve beautiful results with the dyes. Polyester/cotton
blends and wool may also be used; however, the results may be a lighter
shade. Do not dye 100 % synthetics, angora, cashmere, mohair and fabrics
with special finishes.
How much dye to I need to buy?
One package of dye will color 8 oz. dry weight
fabric. This is equal to an adult large T-shirt or 1 1/2 yards of fabric.
Dyeing a larger amount per package will result in a lighter shade.
Can the dyebath be prepared ahead of time?
No. Once the dye mixture is dissolved in water
and added to the dyebath, the reaction begins and dying must take place
immediately. The reaction time is 1 hour so the dyebath can not be reused.
Do I need additional supplies for dyeing?
Salt ( 4 tablespoons per dye pack ), rubber
gloves, measuring cup, plastic spoon and a container for dyeing.
What type of container do I need to use?
A flat-bottomed plastic bowl or a stainless
steel sink is recommended. After dyeing, clean container with a soft abrasive
cleaner and water.
What dye method is recommended?
Hand dyeing is recommended and no boiling is
required.
How do I prepare the fabric for dyeing?
Fabric must be clean and wet. Dye will not cover
stains, faded areas, or bleach spots.
How do I prevent splotching?
Fabric should be correctly prepared. Agitate
the fabric for first 10 minutes in dyebath; then occasionally for the
following 50 minutes.
Can the dyes be mixed to achieve unique colors?
Dyes can be mixed. Basic color principles apply;
yellow and blue make green.
What will happen if I over-dye
an existing fabric?
Beautiful effects can be created by over-dyeing printed fabrics,
such as polka dots, checks, stripes, etc. The dye will blend with the
original color to create a new shade.
Will Dylon dyes cover stains or
bleach marks?
No! It's important to dye clean fabric that has been laundered
to remove excess sizing. For best results, use PFD (prepared for dyeing)
fabric.
